안케패스 전투 대략개요..
베트남전 당시 맹호부대는 남베트남 중부 해안도시 퀴논에 사령부가 위치하였고, 중부 고원지대 주변 1200 평방km가 작전지역이었습니다.
여기엔 퀴논(Qui Nhon)에서 남베트남 제2군단과 미태평양 공군 산하 7공군 기지가 주둔하고 있는 플레이쿠를 잇는 중요한 병참도로인 19번 도로가 관통하는
안케지역도 포함되어 있습니다..
이곳에선 약 6년전인 1965년 10월 19일에 위워솔져스로 유명한 전투인 이아드랑 전투 'Battle of Ia Drang' 가 벌어졌는데요..
북베트남 정규군 제325사단이 플레이쿠 서남쪽 약 35마일 지역(남베트남군 진지)에 대대적인 공격을 가함으로써 미국은 여기에 제1기병사단을 공중강습 투입하게 됩니다.
북베트남군의 기습, 매복에 맞서 수색, 격멸 작전을 펼친 미군의 압도적인 화력과 기동력에 밀린 북베트남군이 캄보디아쪽으로 퇴각함으로써 11월 16일경 전투는 종료됩니다.
대략 짐작컨데 이 중부고원지대는 북베트남 입장에선 남베트남을 양분시키는 전략적 요지임을 알수가 있습니다..
The Battle of Ia Drang was the first major battle between regulars of the United States Army and regulars of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN / NVA) of North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. The two-part battle took place between November 14 and November 18, 1965, at two landing zones (LZs) northwest of Plei Me in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam (approximately 35 miles south-west of Pleiku) as part of the U.S. airmobile offensive codenamed Operation Silver Bayonet. The battle derives its name from the Drang River which runs through the valley northwest of Plei Me, in which the engagement took place. "Ia" means "river" in the local Montagnard language.

안케패스 전투는 1972년 4월 11일부터 4월 26일까지 맹호부대(수도사단) 기갑연대와
월맹군 3사단12연대간에 안케패스에서 벌어진 전투를 말합니다.
이 전투는 북베트남의 춘계공세의 일환으로 226기지에 숨어있던 북베트남 정규군 제3사단 제12연대 약 1565명을 남진시켜 맹호1기갑연대 1중대 전술기지 주변고지인 638고지를 비롯 주요지점을
확보하여 강력한 저항진지를 구축합니다.
철군준비를 하던 맹호부대로서는 날벼락을 맞이한거고, 지휘부의 초동대처 미흡과 병력의 축차투입, 정보부재 등으로 실제 피해규모는 공식기록보다 훨씬 많아보입니다.
살아계신 참전 노병분들의 증언으로 미루어 많은 영웅들이 산화하신걸로 보여집니다..

Hwy 19 through the Mang Yang Pass had a "hair-raising" hair-pin turn for all those who had travel it by convoy. This area was ripe for enemy ambush, and many occurred. This video clip, from National Geographic's series on the Vietnam war, includes an interview with Lt Col Hal Moore plus historical footage regarding an early ground battle of the conflict. Moore commanded American troops during the battle at Ia Drang.
The story of Moore, and the battle, was the subject of Mel Gibson's movie, We Were Soldiers which was based on Moore's book: We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young.
